SacWellness Is Fixed!
As many readers will know, SacWellness has been messed up for a little over a month. Everything on the site has been working properly, but listings were loading really slowly. I decided to step away from blogging while the site was slow so that I wouldn’t draw more attention to the problem and potentially make a bad first impression with new site visitors. I am overjoyed to report that we have fixed this problem!
In developing SacWellness we did a lot of custom coding to add functionality, fix things, and generally make the site better. Somewhere along the line we messed with something that resulted in a problem we didn’t catch till later down the line. This meant that when we did find it, we had to go through lots of old code to find and fix the problem.
Our site was loading well, with each page taking between 2 and 5 seconds to load, but all of a sudden listing pages were taking 10 to 22 seconds to load! It seems like we coded something in a weird way so that more listings resulted in longer load times…which is why it took us a while to find this problem.
Check out the difference in load speeds today after fixing this!
It’s really exciting to see this fix already having an effect on our search engine rankings. Some readers may not know this, but search engines like Google take page speed into consideration when deciding how to rank web pages in search results. Check out the changes I woke up to today!
Why did this take so long?
When we first started creating SacWellness it was just me: Joe Borders, MFT. Shortly after really getting into the meat of what it meant to make a site like this, I decided I really wanted to make it as good as possible. So, I got in contact with some developers who could help me with some custom coding. They did great work and helped me get the site mostly to where it is now. A couple of months ago we switched to a dedicated support team who can help us with coding and other issues with the site. Because of this, the new guys needed time to update things and isolate the problem. Because they were new to the site it took them some time to find and fix the problem. Ultimately we went back to our original developers for help and they fixed it in a little under a week! We plan on returning to our dedicated support team now that everything is getting squared away.
How we’re going to prevent this from happening again
In the future We’re definitely going to be more careful about reviewing any changes to the site before we make them live. We’re just about to a place now where these kinds of things shouldn’t really happen anymore. It took a lot of coding to get the site to where it is now. From here on, most coding will be relatively small and thereby less likely to break anything.
Free till 2020
Because of all of this we’ve extended the free period for all therapist listings to 2020. Click the following link to read more about why we decided to extend the free period.
If you’re a therapist in the greater Sacramento area, create a listing now and you’ll get it free till 2020. Only 17$/month after that. Join over 200 local therapists who have joined so far and help us build a local resource for our area! ^_^.
