In 1998, Martin Seligman wrote the book Authentic Happiness, which is focused on using positivity focused therapy. This book, and positive therapy in general, support the idea of encouraging people to recognize and appreciate things that bring joy in life, and to build the trait of gratitude into our regular lives. Positive therapy works on the idea that happiness can be broken down into 1) positive emotion, 2) engagement, and 3) meaning. A common practice in this approach is recording things one is grateful for in a journal or even setting timers to remind oneself to try and find something positive to be grateful for.
