Many things can lead one to self-harm, but determining the cause is only half of the process. In order to heal and stop self-harming behaviors, one must build better coping skills and understanding about stress, pain, and sadness. A therapist who is familiar with this problem and has experience and training in its struggles can be a helpful guide in finding solutions and overcoming the issues that have led to self harming behaviors. Self harm is not always done with suicidal intent. However, if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and/or feel you are in danger of taking action on suicidal thoughts, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also call the national suicide prevention hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
