Emotionally focused therapy, or EFT, was created primarily by Sue Johnson in the 1980’s, and is very similar to attachment based therapy. In EFT, the key focus is on relationships and how fear of abandonment in those relationships can lead to behaviors and feelings that may be painful or counterproductive. EFT works to address these fears or insecurities and takes clients through a nine step process that involves acknowledging the client’s fears, working to form stronger connections in relationships, and making changes as needed in relationships.
