This approach is centered on examining the family unit and the systems, hierarchies, and patterns that may exist. Therapists who use a structural family therapy (or SFT) approach may draw up a chart of how the family works (or doesn’t) as a unit, and may focus sessions on how to alter that system. This approach was pioneered by Salvador Minuchin in the 1960’s.
