Sand tray therapy is often used with children, though it can be used for any client. It involves miniature figurines and a tray of sand, and allows the client to represent their thoughts and views of the world through physical objects in play/reflection. Sand tray therapy was first used by British pediatrician Margaret Lowenfield, but has been used and modified by many. Sand play therapy (Which differs in that it is more focused on only present moment feelings/processing) is a slightly different approach with very similar objectives, and is more grounded in Jungian psychology.
