Motivational interviewing is a specific type of counseling that is all about what’s right there in the name: motivation. This style of therapy is usually very focused on one thing: motivating change in the client. It’s often used when a client is dealing with addiction or other behavioral problems and needs help getting engaged with and finding a clear path to change. Usually this type of counseling is brief, lasting only a few sessions.
