Internal family systems therapy is based on the idea that we all have an internal mental system, and we can learn to understand it better through viewing it as a family structure. In a way, it is similar to Freud’s ideas about an inner id and ego, but it’s more complex in that internal family systems are comprised of sub-personalities that make up one’s whole self. Ie, there are parts of ourselves that are compassionate, parts that are fearful, and parts that are protective. Recognizing these inner working and connecting parts, and understanding how and why they do or don’t work well together is the basis of internal family systems therapy.
