Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, or EMDR, was developed by Francine Shapiro in the early 1990’s, and centers on the idea that controlled, specific motions of the eye, hand, and/or exposure to certain sounds/rhythms while recounting trauma can help the mind heal. This is a technique that has been used and tested to treat symptoms ranging from depression to PTSD, with much success. More about EMDR
