Black Joy Parade and Festival
This Sunday, February 24th, an awesome community event is happening in Oakland: the Black Joy Parade and Festival. There will be vendors, performances, a parade, and even a soccer tournament. This event is family friendly and seeks to spread love and unity for the Black community and its allies. We didn’t know about this one till just recently and wanted to share some of the details ^_^.
“Black Joy Parade is a hyper-positive, family-friendly turn up that celebrates the Black experience and our community’s contribution to cultures past, present and future. We invite you to come be present, be creative, be open and be free.
The parade will begin on February 24, 2019, at the corner of 14th St. and Harrison St., Oakland, CA, at 12:30 PM. It will finish at the corner of Broadway and 20th St., and we will be celebrating in the four blocks between there and the corner of 22nd St. and Webster St.
Join us and crown your joy.”
Leading up to the main event on Sunday, there are other events going on earlier in the week, from an open mic poetry night to two brunches for Black men and women. To find out more about other events leading up to the big day, check out blackjoy.org’s event page.

How To Get Involved
Unfortunately, because this event is occurring so soon, all performance, parade participation, and volunteer slots have been filled, but there is always next year! Also the best way to still actively be involved is of course to attend! Enjoy the shows, sights, food, and more, and connect with community.
Who Will Be Performing
The following are listed as performing:
Like any community event, this is a great opportunity to connect with like minded people, local (California local–Oakland may not be right here in Sacramento, but it is nearby!) culture, and to show support for each other. Also it looks to just be a good time! With performances, vendors, and a parade full of people celebrating Black culture, this is sure to be an event to remember.
